Early Life and Career

Rudolphus Franciscus Marie Ruud Lubbers was born on May 7, 1939, in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He studied economics at the University of Rotterdam before entering politics.

Political Career

Lubbers joined the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) and quickly rose through the ranks. He served as Minister of Economic Affairs (1982-1986) before becoming Prime Minister in 1982.

Prime Minister of the Netherlands

As Prime Minister, Lubbers implemented a series of economic reforms known as the "Lubbers Austerity Program." These reforms reduced government spending and stimulated economic growth.

Lubbers also played a key role in the European integration process. He helped to lay the groundwork for the Maastricht Treaty, which established the European Union.

Legacy

Lubbers retired as Prime Minister in 1994. He remained active in public life, serving as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (1999-2005).

Lubbers is widely regarded as one of the most influential Dutch politicians of the 20th century. He died on February 14, 2018, at the age of 78.
